Kaboom!

I was happily typing in a new post when all of a sudden, there was a loud POP! And my computer died. Gave me such a fright.. Was probably the power supply.. But now the problem is that my power supply is inbuilt with the motherboard! So I can't just simply change it.. Gonna have to bring it down to the shop to see what they can do.. :(

Lazy Sunday

Just thought I'd share the pretty WoW screenie of the skyline at dawn, just outside Ironforge. Computer graphics are geting quite amazing, aren't they..

Watched Dick Tracy on dvd last night. Still so good after more than a decade.. I reckon Sin City got some inspiration from it. The exaggeratedly bold colours, larger than life comic book style. Classic.

Woke up about 10+ in the morning.. Spent the day lazing around playing WoW. Was PvPing in Arathi Basin till 3pm, which was time for the scheduled guild raid. AB is fun when you're playing with people who actually listen to instructions and work together. Today's raid was on the new dungeon Zul'Grub.. Was pretty mind numbing due to the number of trash mobs. Quite a cool zone though.

Gonna go watch another dvd now before heading to bed.. Will have to do some school work tomorrow.. :(

I'm back..!

I survived the field trip! Woohoo! Hehe.. Actually, it wasn't half as bad as I thought i would be.. Out of cold, tired, hungry and dirty, I was only pretty cold at some times of the night, and a little dirty from tramping through underbush. But tired, no.. Was a fluke that I chose the best bunk. :P Was right at the end, far away from the main shed, so wasn't disturbed by the noise, and my bunk mates were pretty much all the considerate sort. :) And hungry, definately no! A little sick of sandwiches now, but I certainly can't say I went hungry.. Here's a day by day run down on my trip!

Day 1
Was late for the bus! My clock was slow or something, so I thought I'd left the house 10 minutes before 9am, which would give me plenty of time to stroll along. But halfway down the path, I looked at my watch and it was already 9:05! Yipes.. Luckily, the bus was still there, and I was the last one on before we left. The bus ride was a little more than 3 hours, with a stop for lunch.. I had a hot dog!

The field station was a couple of km down a horribly pitted dirt track, so we had to get off the bus to walk.. Thankfully there were 3 station wagons to load our bigger bags on. My bag was like the smallest of all! Compact packing for the win! :P Some people looked like they packed for 2 weeks!

We were divided into 5 smaller groups.. It was a rotation sort of thing, with each group doing a different practical at the same time and then switching around. The first day was freaking windy.. Luckily my group did the plant practical on the first day. I pity the people who had to go into the water for the fish pract! The wind was so chilly.. The plant pract was pretty easy, just collecting samples of all the different species within a 20m radius, measuring their height and leaf width etc, for two different forest types, dry sclerophyll and wet sclerophyll.

Dinner was yummy! David Briscoe, one of the volunteer staff, loves cooking, so he cooked dinner everyday! Two thumbs up! 'Twas amazing the stuff he came up with over a scrummy outdoor stove, for no less than 50 people, mind you! We had sausages, steak and salad on the first day. I went to bed pretty early, slept surprisingly well too.

Day 2
Discovered that there was nice hot water! Had bacon and eggs for breakie, mmm! Did the invertebrates pract after breakfast. We had to shake bugs out of the vegetation, classify them and count them etc. The stuff you can actually find is really interesting. There were some that were really funky looking and colourful..

Sandwiches for lunch, then had the bird watching practical.. I couldn't see a thing! Whenever I saw something move, I'd bring up my binoculars and it would be gone already.. :P Other people were like rattling off bird species, I was just standing there looking around in bewilderment. Bird watching, fail. :(

Dave's Famous Chicken Curry was for dinner! Good stuff! Had two servings.. :D After that we had a trivia quiz, my group came in 2nd place! Had Milky Bars as our prize. We also won the best group name bonus. We called ourselves "John Howard's Illigitiment Children".. And yes it was spelt wrong.. Dave called us the "Illiterate Children" after that. :P Took the 2nd hot shower of the day and went to bed..

Day 3
My group was so lucky.. We did the fish practical on the 3rd day when it was nice and sunny! The wind died down as well. The lake was beautiful.. It was such a calm day that there was barely a ripple on the surface and it was almost mirror like.. We had to use a net to catch the fishes to identify and count them.. Was pretty hard work! Had to keep the bottom lead line down to prevent the fishies from escaping under the net. It's back breaking to stick your butt in the air with your hands underwater, so I sort of half squatted in the water, which meant I got all wet and my legs didn't really like me much either. It was quite unbelievable the number and variety of fish we got though!

As usual, sandwiches for lunch, then we did the plankton pract. We came at a bad time, it was the time of the year that phytoplankton were reproducing at a crazy rate! So there were like a gazillion of dinoflagellates and not much of anything else. Boring. :P

Dave cooked spaghetti bolognaise for dinner.. Our group had to help chop up stuff! I did the onions and my hands smelt funny for quite a while after that. :P I showered three times on the third day! Loving the hot water! It rained at night though.

Day 4
The fourth day we had to get into groups of our own chosing to do a project of our own design. I did mine with John, Tanya and Lachlan.. I initially only just wanted to do a project with Tanya 'coz she has a good idea of what she's doing and she's great with plants and she's really nice and understanding of my ignorance. :P But somehow John sort of pushed himself into our group and almost took over.. I don't like him much, he's really pushy and unpleasant to work with.. I don't mind Lachlan though, he's pretty nice and knows a fair bit about plants as well. I was more or less the weakest link.. > <;

Day 4's dinner was superb! There was beef stroganoff, with carrots, peas, potato with loads of sour cream, and caramelized onions! I'm getting hungry just thinking of it again.. And then there was delicious apple pie with ice cream for desset! Wowz..

Day 5
Finished up the last bit of our project in the morning.. John couldn't be bothered and went home early in his own car! So we're not sharing those results with him kekeke.. Again, sandwiches for breakfast and lunch.. See why I'm a 'lil sandwich-phobic now? Aussies are crazy, they just eat bread all the time..

Finally got on the bus home.. Yay! Home sweet home.. :)

Ecology field trip

I'm down 'coz I have to go on some dumb field trip to Smith Lake or what not for my Ecology unit. 4 days of being cold, tired, hungry and dirty! Sigh.. Well, I'll be leaving on Saturday morning and will be back on Wednesday, so don't panic if you don't see any posts ok! :D Will tell you all about how cold, tired, hungry and dirty I was when I get back.. :P

Sky High

Yea, I know it sounds like a stupid show! But it was actually really funny.. Some what corny at times and full of silly puns.. Like the guy called Warren Peace, whose father was a villian and his mother was a hero. Geddit? :P There were also references to other superhero comics, like the boy who was bitten by a spider.. Sound familiar?

Anyways, the story is about a Will Stronghold, whose parents are the greatest superhero duo of all time. So there are big expectations for him.. Unfortunately, when the first dy of school at Sky High rolls around, he still hasn't discovered his powers! Worse still, the school nurse tells him that he might not ever get them..

As though things aren't bad enough.. He finds out that the son of an villian that his father put behind bars in in the same school! That's Warren Peace, by the way. First day of school and he already has an archenemy! But the high part of his day is when Gwen, the gorgeous student body president, actually seems interested in him! What an eventful first day at school.. But things quickly get even more complicated after that!

It's really quite a good show, you just have to leave your skepticism behind and treat it like a comic book. Highly recommended if you're in need of cheering up, as I was last night. :P Linky to the official webby.. :)

The Chain of Life

My Animal Behavior lecturer sure is student savvy. He knows that we simply can't just sit down and listen to a lecture right after a test, so what he does is let us watch a documentary. I did ok for the test, only had a couple of questions that I wasn't sure of.

Anyway, the film was called The Chain of Life, I think! It was about the vast variety of mating systems in the animal kingdom. Did you know that barnacles have the largest penis to body length ratio? :P They are also hermaphroditic, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. Then there are fish that can change sex. There was also stuff about polygamus animals that have harems. Usually it's 1 male to many females, but for some it's the other way round. Hmmm... :P And of course, there was the ultimate symbol of monogamy, the albatross. These beautiful birds mate for life, which can be over 60 years!

I hate Mondays. m(_ _)m

Last minute cramming

I have good news and bad news for my Ecology unit. Good news always 1st right? :) I got 28/30 for my numerical excerise and 5.4/6 for my talk about the rodents in the Monte Desert. Here comes the bad news.. I missed the deadline for the practical report. Which was today. Oh well.. Managed to get an extention till Thursday. The worst part was having to ask in front of everyone else. *snicker snicker*

Busy week ahead again I guess. Biostats assignment due tomorrow at 10, Animal Behavior test in the afternoon, and Animal Structure & Function test Wednesday morning. Sheesh..

Astral

Well.. He's far far away in Tekong now enjoying the mud and mosquitoes.. And by the time he comes back this post will be deep in the archives. So unless he digs through them all the way back for 3 months, he won't see this! On to the mushy stuff then.. :P

He's been gone for just 3 days and his absence is strikingly noticable. No more MSN spam.. No more weird insults on my tag board.. Boohoo.. I miss him! :(

Met him in an online game, DAoC. Our main characters were on different servers and it's complicated how we actually got to know each other hehe. I can't really remember anyway. Since then he became my online buddy, always sharing with me cool links and mp3's and stuff. He always spams with 1 word lines and he insults me alot, but he's a really nice guy at heart. My favourite rebuttal is "I love you too dear".. :)

To Astral if you somehow managed to dig this up.. And would probably mean you're back home.. Welcome back! I missed you.. :P

Open House

Just came back from my uni's Open House.. What a freaking hot day! I haven't experienced this kind of weather for months.. The kind where you walk in the sun for 10 minutes and feel like dying of dehydration. Oh my, it feels like Singapore!

Anyways, there was lots of interesting stuff at the Open House.. There were even a live animal look and touch exhibition with a snake, a bat, an owl and lots of lizards. Then there was all the plants and bugs and stuff.. Also went to the Biology Museum where there were lots of stuffed animals and skeletons.

Actually, I was only really interested in the biology exhibits, so I didn't take a look at the rest. It does make me wonder what the finance department would display though! Ended off the tour with a super unhealthy sausage and onion sandwich, which had lots of black overcooked carbon bits and was dripping with oil.

Razorgore down!

Woot! For those who are going "huh?", he's just the 1st big bad boss in a new instance called Blackwing Lair in WoW. :P Sorry to disappoint, but that picture of the dragon up top isn't him. I was too busy dying to have a chance to take a good picture. The picture up top is of the next boss after Razorgore, with a very long and complicated name, but just Vael for short.. Our next challenge! So exciting! This kill is such a big morale boost for the guild. We are the second guild on our server to down him. :)

The pic on the right is of the mage circle! I'm sure you can spot me! The one with the huge pink ponytails.. Clockwise is from me is Gambinette, Bonnie, Thrakks, Evilslash (somewhat shrunken from Noggenfogger elixir :P) and Aquarius.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

FINALLY got to watch it. It was out in Singapore like.. what? 2 months ago? Bah.. Anyway, it was pretty good, quirky and quite random. I liked it. I won't say much 'coz to most of you it's already old news. :P

The tic price went up.. Up 'till recently it was AUD$5.50 on Tuesdays, which wasn't so bad. Now it's up to $7.50. On other days it's $13.50 for students and $16.50 for adults I think. Crazy right?!

And then there's the popcorn.. The SMALLEST combo (ie. small popcorn + small coke) is $8.50. In Singapore that's like S$12.. Breakfast, lunch and dinner? I won't even talk about the large combo.

The seating is really stupid too.. You just buy a tic and sit anywhere you want. This results in everyone leaving seats between the next person. What a waste of space! The only good part is that those idiotic people who come in late have to sit right up in front of the screen.

A couple of shows I'm looking forward to are Narnia and X-Men 3. Until then, I think I'll just stick to DVDs from EzyVid.

Cricket

Nope, not the stupid game.. The insect! Yea.. That's my drawing of the poor cricket that was subsequently mutilated. Not bad right.. I'm actually rather proud of it. :) At least it looks like a cricket. The scientific drawings are actually rather fun.. Did you know you can have a career in drawing these stuff? I think it would be cool but it's not for me.. I took like 2x longer to draw this compared to the other people in my class! I'm too much of a perfectionist. :P

Positivity

I deleted a post that was here previously.. One obviously banged out in anger. I removed it 'coz I decided that my blog should be a happy place.. I guess I feel if I only record happy memories, I'll be able to look back and say "Wow.. I've had such a happy life", instead of remembering all the bad things. So yea.. Happy face! :)

Phew!

Managed to live through another Monday.. Yay!

Finally got the Ecology talk over and done with.. I had to talk about the paper "The effect of plant cover on seed removal by rodents in the Monte Desert". As I mentioned before, scientists always manage to make the interesting sound mind boggingly boring, so the paper was much more facinating than the title would suggest. Anyway, I was a 'lil nervous at the start so was mostly reading from the slides, but managed to calm down after that.. So hopefully I would have sounded more spontaneous.

Everyone loves Magical Trevor! 'Coz the tricks that he does are ever so clever..

Gliding Antics

My Animal Sructure & Function assignment was to write an article for New Scientist magazine, based on a scientific journal. As you probably know, those stodgy old scientists tend to make their papers unbelievably long winded and boring, even when the study itself is incredibly facinating. Here's a little bit of the finished product. Really quite interesting stuff.

Many tree-dwelling creatures have mastered the ability of gliding, or what scientists call “directed aerial descent”. Gliding is used by” flying” squirrels, frogs, lizards and snakes to escape from predators, or to find resources. Now, ants can be added to the list.

Canopy ants have many adaptations to help them thrive in their lofty habitat, such as sticky “tarsi”, or toes, to help them cling to surfaces. Despite these adaptations, the ants are frequently dislodged by the wind or other tree-dwelling creatures. Intriguingly, workers of the canopy ant species Cephalotes atratus also drop off their perches voluntarily, to avoid the approach of predators. These ants are then able to skillfully glide back to their home tree trunk, with more than 80% success, during a fall.

Observations of this behavior show that the falling ants follow a J-shaped trajectory back to the tree trunk in three distinct stages. The initial vertical drop is followed by a spectacular mid-air turn to align the abdomen with the tree, winding up in a steep but directed glide to the trunk. One of the most fascinating aspects of gliding ants is that they consistently glide backwards, hind legs first, which was previously unheard of in any other macroorganism. Upon making contract with the trunk, the ants would adhere there, or sometimes tumble downwards for a short distance before latching on. They then proceed to march back up the tree, often returning to the very same branch they originally dropped off from, usually within ten minutes of the fall.

This fascinating discovery has been documented in an article entitled “Directed aerial descent in canopy ants”, published in the February 10, 2005 issue of Nature. It is the first documented study of wingless, gliding flight in the Earth’s most diverse lineage, the insects. It is also the first record of intentional backwards gliding in any macroscopic creature.
